ALA WASHINGTON OFFICE OFFERS TOLL-FREE 800-TELEPHONE SERVICE
                         1-800-941-8478

American Library Association members can now use a toll-free 800
number to contact the ALA Washington Office and the Office for
Information Technology Policy (OITP). The number, for calls from
outside the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, is 1-800-941-8478.

This new service puts ease of telephone contact with the
Washington Office and OITP on a par with ALA headquarters in
Chicago, which has long offered toll-free calling. A special
convenience for ALA members, legislative network participants,
and library advocates, the new service is part of ALA's expansion
of its Washington presence to implement ALA Goal 2000--to promote
public participation in a free and open information society.

The 800 number complements new voice mail and after-hours phone
service capabilities installed with the recent move of the
Washington Office and OITP to new expanded facilities.

JANUARY 20 RECEPTION AT ALA MIDWINTER CONFERENCE
                               AND
MAY 6 BANQUET PRIOR TO NATIONAL LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE DAY

The American Library Association and grass-roots library
supporters have begun to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the
ALA Washington Office. There will be a special event at the all-
conference reception on Saturday, January 20, during the ALA
Midwinter Conference in San Antonio. A "golden anniversary"
banquet, scheduled for May 6, 1996, to celebrate the important
grass-roots efforts of library advocates and the ALA Washington
Office, will be held in conjunction with the 22nd Annual Library
Legislative Day, May 7.

ALA WASHINGTON OFFICE SENDS NEW YEAR'S GREETINGS
                              AND
                    THANKS TO ALAWON READERS

This is the last issue of the 1995 ALAWON, Volume 4. We look
forward to expanding our electronic communications with ALA
members and other library advocates in 1996. We hope to use the
strengths of this newsletter while creating new opportunities to
communicate with ALA members and others involved in grassroots
library advocacy and legislative issues. As ALA recognizes the
first half-century of the Washington Office, library advocates
can use these events to discuss and reflect on the challenges of
the next 50 years.

The ALA Washington Office staff extends appreciation to all ALA
members and other library advocates and supporters with whom we
have worked. We look forward to our continued work together and
wish a Happy New Year to all.
